What is IFS Therapy?

One of the main therapy models I practice from is called Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy. The IFS model is based on the idea that each individual has an inner world, or an “internal family” of “parts.” Each of our “parts” carries thoughts, feelings, memories, and burdens. I typically like to reference Pixar’s “Inside Out” movie - similar to Riley, we each have a rich inner world composed of different “parts” who hold varied roles, motivations, fears, and beliefs. Many of us actually already think/speak in “parts.” For example:

  • I want to change careers, but I’m scared of taking the risk.

  • I want to set this boundary, but I feel guilty.

  • A part of me wants to break away and be my own person, but another part of me wants to still honor my family.

In IFS Therapy, I will support you in identifying and getting to know your parts. Through guided experiential exercises and dialogue, I’ll help facilitate unburdening and healing parts of you. You can read more about IFS Therapy here.

IFS Therapy can be for anyone, but it might be particularly helpful for you if:

  • You feel you already have pretty good awareness of your trauma and you want to take the next step in healing from it.

  • You’re seeking alternatives to traditional talk therapy and you want to explore a more somatic/experiential form of therapy.

  • You feel a sense of internal conflict(s) and you want to better understand and navigate the conflict(s).

  • You’re interested in exploring and understanding your inner world, including gaining insights into different parts of your personality.

  • You’re curious about understanding the root causes of your feelings, thoughts, and tendencies.

  • You want to work on becoming more self-compassionate and self-accepting.
